Debut: How old were you when you fell in love with animation?
Grace: I fell in love with animation at an early age, much like any toddler I was drawn to the bright colours and engaging characters that lived in a surreal world. I remember as I grew a bit older I started watching movies like Spirited Away and it changed my perspective completely on animation— it wasn’t just for children’s entertainment, it’s a gorgeous universal art form.
Debut: How did you learn to create your art? Are you self-taught in animation or did you do courses for it?
I’ve been an artist my whole life and was mainly self-taught before I decided to go to college to pursue 3D animation and apply my artistry in a new medium I was really interested in.
Debut: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced since following that career path?
It was definitely trying to break into the industry with such little professional experience. I think a lot of artists can agree that breaking into the industry especially as a newcomer is super difficult and took a lot of time and dedication to prove my skill. My portfolio is a story of personal growth, if you look back at my earlier stuff and compare it to what I do now it’s a huge difference and shows how I really worked to overcome that big challenge (although I’m still learning and growing every day).
Debut: We love the futuristic yet retro feel to your animations, where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw my inspiration mostly from 60’s mid-century art and the ideologies that come from that era. When the space race happened it was kind of a bright time where a lot of new technologies were arriving and people were actually excited about what the future might look like, in turn, led them to depict that in various way which inspires me/my work immensely. Simply mod and chic!
Debut: And we love it! How long does each piece take you?
Each piece can take anywhere from four hours to a week of straight work, depends on the complexity of it and what I’m trying to achieve with it. I spend a lot more time conceptualizing and building the foundation so it’s strong and is exactly what I imagined it to be.
Debut: What do you love most about the images you create?
I love that it speaks for itself, each has their own personality and sound to it— I feel like each one is set in a different universe that I can transport to.
Debut: What animators do you look up to?
I really look up to animators like Zolloc, Patrick Sahlooter, and Extraweg. They make some uniquely beautiful pieces that stand out and is technically challenging, inspired me to get moving into the world of 3D design.
Debut: Where do you see your journey taking you in the next five years?
I see it taking me to new heights within my city, hopefully it allows me to grow into a much more experienced artist with a lot more under my belt!
Debut: How have you used social media to your advantage?
Social media was a crucial tool to getting my work organized in a way so that it was easily digestible and available to essentially the world, my work being recognized is something that I’m so grateful for. Helped me get off my feet and find my first freelance opportunities as well!
Debut: What advice would you give an inspiring animator?
DO NOT GIVE UP! There was a time where I almost gave up and if I did I would not have made it to where I am now. No matter how long it takes, continue to learn, create, explore, believe you can do it. Growth is not stagnant so no matter what there’s only one way for you to go and it’s up
