I don’t mean to be cheesy, but ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ has always been that movie for me, you know, the comforting movie that you can rely on to get you through those cold winter days – alongside a pack of digestive biscuits that Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) definitely wouldn’t approve of!
It’s been said time and time again that it’s not a real reflection of working in a magazine, but oh how exciting it still is, so let’s just call it a ‘dramatic exaggeration’ of working in a magazine for us who love Miranda regardless of her ‘boss from hell’ status. The hit 2006 cult classic was actually based on a novel by Lauren Weisberger and made $326m worldwide making it no surprise that a Broadway show was next.
I’ve been watching ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ since it came out since I was just a wee girl and since then it’s only added to my love for fashion and maybe even inspired my dream job of being a fashion journalist. So when the rumour mill started turning in 2015 with the prospect of a Broadway production of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ my heart stopped beating and I’m pretty sure the world stopped turning for a few moments (no exaggeration) yet it was exactly that, just a rumour! Although I kept my hopes up, because, The Devil Wears Prada – as a musical – a girl can only dream!
And then, all my hoping, wishing and praying payed off because, at the start of the year the announcement was made. The announcement of dreams. ‘The devil Wears Prada’ will become a musical. Hallelujah. Thank you lord. Thank you to the fashion gods!
What could really be better than ‘The Devil Wears Prada’? My answer would have previously been, a simple nothing. Yet now, the answer is obviously… The Devil Wears Prada as a musical. A freaking Musical!!
Okay, so you must be thinking now, what could really be better than this? Chocolate that contains no calories? Nuh uh, the answer is Elton John. Well, Elton John writing the writing the music, that is!
At the end of January it was announced (yet another amazing announcement) that Elton John has been hired to write the music for the Broadway adaption of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. John will be the perfect addition to the team with his extensive experience in the musical genre having already worked on Broadway hits such as ‘Billy Eliott’ and ‘The Lion King’. Alongside the award winning singer/songwriter, Sir Elton John, will be the playwright Paul Rudnick who’s previous plays include Jeffrey and his screen work includes ‘Addams Family Values’.
When asked about the production, John said “Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting,” and he went onto confess that he is a huge fan “I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”
The stage production has no set date yet, but just knowing it’s happening is currently good enough for me, and I’m sure any other Devil Wears Prada fan will feel the same. So, what will it be like? Will the ‘clackers’ (term for the ladies wearing very tall stilettos) have a song for that moment Miranda first walks in? Surely Andy will get a very cool number after she totally revamps her look and walks down the streets like a true fashion queen. My last question is… who is going to be in it? I’m not sure anyone could truly do Miranda Priestly like Meryl Streep did!
