Let’s Celebrate The Modern Mother

Last week you may have seen, plastered all over Instagram – clips from Fergie’s comeback music video entitled ‘M.I.L.F. $’; celebrating the new generation of mums, including famous mothers such as Kim K and Ciara. Did we love it? Yes!  The video is mirroring the modern representation of motherhood we are now experiencing…

No longer do we automatically picture a mother in an apron baking cookies and ironing her children’s clothes ready for school. Now, being a mum isn’t so much about being a domestic goddess, but more about juggling her responsibilities with a fun, full life too. Kim Kardashian wouldn’t be seen dead in an apron – unless it was Balmain of course.

Blake Lively, Beyonce, Victoria Beckham, Scarlett Johansson, Stella McCartney, Jessica Alba, the list goes on for modern mums who manage looking after their children whilst maintaining their own personal lives away from motherhood duties. Just like the women in Fergie’s very un-mumsy video, modern mums are now showing they don’t have to succumb to old-fashioned stereotypes – they can, in fact, or at least attempt to ‘have it all’.

An example closer to home, is accessories designer, Sophia Webster. Being devoted to her husband and toddler hasn’t got in the way of her flourishing business within the world of design. Having won the Conde Nast Footwear Emerging Designer in 2012 and since, winning the BFC’s Vogue Fashion Fund in 2016 – the second footwear designer to ever receive this recognition. SophiaHer beautifully feminine and intricately designed footwear is now available worldwide, with additional Children’s, Bridal and Handbag lines.

In addition, Mila Kunis has recently announced she is pregnant for the second time. But her new venture into motherhood hasn’t stopped her brilliant acting career. In fact, in an ironic turn of events, her latest release is entitled ‘Bad Moms’. This film focuses on the ways in which women are going against societal ideals set for mums to follow. Kunis herself challenges the traditional mother role by continuing her career, alongside maintaining a happy new family life.

And it’s not just celeb mums who are challenging the stereotypes. More and more women are doing what they do best – multitasking. And do so, very well between their careers and motherhood.

With so many new pop culture references to bad/hot/fun Mums, the question is are women starting to realise more that having a child isn’t an automatic prison sentence? Life does, in fact, continue and as the saying goes, we really can have it all!
