How To Plan Your Ultimate Summer Road Trip

Summer is just around the corner, and the temptation to travel around the world and soak up the sun and culture from every corner of the globe is incredibly high. However, our bank balance is a constant reminder to bring us back down to reality. So, you may not be able to afford three weeks in South America, but there are many choices only a car ride away to kick-start your Summer in style.

Rally some close friends together, and get ready for a road trip that will make this Summer one to remember. If you fill the car with more friends, there’ll be less to pay out for petrol and even more fun. Now, the only thing you have to worry about is where to head to first?

If you’re looking for a fun, action-packed few days – with the chance to immerse yourself in a little culture too – why not head to Holland’s thriving capital of Amsterdam? With an abundance of bars, clubs and a few coffee shops here and there, this is the perfect place for a few days with your friends. Accommodation is inexpensive with hostel dorms ranging from £7 a night, to luxury hotel rooms coming in at under £100 a night. As well as fun nights out, Amsterdam is full of culture to soak in. free-people-headed-to-amsterdam-for-its-january-2013-catalog-1Spend a day exploring Anne Frank’s house, visit the world-famous Rijksmuseum and see Van Gogh’s best work at the museum dedicated to this local artist. 6 hours from London, this may be one of the furthest destinations, but it may also be the funnest. If you’re a group of non-drivers, opt for a coach for under £15 one way in peak Summer months.

If Amsterdam isn’t quite for you, why not travel a little closer to home and visit Antwerp, the second biggest city in Belgium. Just under 5 hours from London in the car, this fashionable city is the perfect spot for a few days this Summer. Antwerp is known for its fashion scene, so make sure you browse as many stores as you can. Make a special visit to Graanmarkt-13, Antwerp’s interesting concept store, which combines shopping with tailoring, dining and relaxation. Staying in Antwerp can be reasonable, with hostel dorms starting at £10 a night to more luxurious hotels coming in at just over £45 a night. Get ready for a trip full of sightseeing, fashion and a whole lot of sweet food. If you’re there over a weekend, make sure to visit the Theaterplein Square on a Saturday to see the bird market, full of birds, flowers and pets.

An alternative would be to stay within the British borders and head over to the West for a few days this Summer. Somerset is full of fun places to visit, such as the city of Bath, Bristol and the seaside town of Weston Super-mare. Spend a day exploring the roman baths, gothic architecture and vast array of shops in the town centre of Bath before heading for a night out in energetic Bristol.

With a number of clubs to choose from and a lively student scene, this is the perfect city to have a night on the town. With dorm rooms from £10 a night, you’ll easily find a place to rest your head after dancing the night away. You’ll then only be a few miles away from the fun seaside town of Weston Super-mare, where you and your friends can grab an ice cream and soak in that British sunshine.

Don’t spend your summer moping about not being able to jet off to an exotic location – there’s enough nearby to keep you busy, whether you venture out of the UK or not.
