The modelling world was completely shocked last year by the news that one of the most successful British supermodels, Cara Delevingne, was to leave the industry to pursue a much sought after acting career. Wanting to explain her reasons to a legion of fans including her 17 million Instagram followers, the doe-eyed, perfect-browed 23-year-old, sat down with The Times for a revealing interview, giving reasons as to how and why she made her final decision.
Having developed a severe case of skin condition psoriasis after months of heavy travel and very little rest, Cara said: “I was, like, fight and flight for months. Just constantly on edge.
“Modeling just made me feel a bit hollow after a while,” she adds. “It didn’t make me grow at all as a human being. And I kind of forgot how young I was. I felt so old.”
In addition, the London native, who considers herself a headstrong feminist, lamented the fact that she had to give into posing in sexually suggestive ways and in her own words, it ‘made her sick.’
She continued: “It’s horrible and it’s disgusting. You start when you are really young and … you get subjected to … not great stuff.” With that said, she walked her last runway on the Chanel/Fall Winter 2015/2016 in March 2015…which opened the doors for her new acting career to take charge!
And just like that, Cara made her way to Hollywood, starring in films such as drama Paper Towns, fantasy film Pan, and this year she will appear in the much anticipated, comic blockbuster Suicide Squad, also starring Will Smith and Jared Leto.
Of her new found acting roles, Cara claims this has been something that has remained a long time passion of hers, reminiscing about the first time she stepped on stage at a Christmas Jazz musical and how it made her feel so alive: ‘from that day, I was like I want to entertain people!’
And now, having ticked off modelling from her list and getting her foot through the door on the acting front, Miss Delevinge now has her sights on inspiring, encouraging and making a real ‘difference and to be a good role model, ‘to young girls everywhere’. Well we can’t wait to see what you more you have in store for us Cara…
